Assistant Principal
Kayleigh Thornton

I am honored to join the Carson Middle School team as an Assistant Principal. It is a privilege to return to District 8 and once again serve our military community. This marks my third year as an Assistant Principal and my 12th year in education.
I earned my B.A. in Sports Medicine from Colorado Mesa University, as well as a master’s degree in Special Education and a Principal’s license from UCCS. I am deeply committed to the belief that every student can succeed and make a meaningful impact in the world.
Raised in an Air Force family, I am originally from Maryland, but my family has proudly called Colorado home for the past 28 years. Outside of work, I enjoy golfing with my husband, cheering on our two kids at their soccer games, and traveling.

Brett Derickson

Mr. Derickson comes to Carson Middle School after three years as an assistant principal at Fountain-Fort Carson High School, and now is in his sixth year here as an Assistant Principal! He is most proud of his 18 years as a social studies teacher and many years as a soccer coach. Mr. Derickson is a passionate educator whose love for learning extends far beyond the school house walls. Mr. Derickson oversees athletics and activities at Carson Middle School, so feel free to reach out to him with any questions you may have about extracurricular involvement for your students. Mr. Derickson is truly excited to be an Eagle as he is inspired by the rewards and challenges of serving our Army families.
A husband of twenty-three years, and the father of two boys in college and beautiful daughter in high school, he understands both the power of a first-class education, along with the need to help students find their place in the world and community. It is Mr. Derickson's hope that he will get to know each student and family in the Eagle community so he can assist in this journey.

Dean of Students

As a proud FFC graduate, it’s an honor to give back to the district that helped shape who I am as an educator. With 15 years of experience as an educator, 10 of those proudly spent in our district, I’m excited to join Carson Middle School as the Dean of Students and continue supporting the students, families and staff of our incredible community!
I’ve taught at both the elementary and middle school levels, most recently supporting teachers as the instructional coach at Fountain Middle School. I believe all students can learn and achieve when they’re given a safe space to take academic risks.
My educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from CSU–Pueblo, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with a literacy focus from the University of Texas at Arlington, and the completion of the principal licensure program at UCCS. These experiences have deepened my passion for supporting both student success and instructional growth. I am committed to fostering a student-centered, hands-on learning environment that allows all students to grow and succeed!
Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, golfing and spending time with my daughter, who will be a freshman this year.
